Today I will offer you a few steps on how to optimize the images of your website and how you can exploit them to the best of their potential. The first step is the alt tag and the file name.
As for alt tags and file names, you want to be as descriptive as possible. It is important to remember that Google cannot understand images in the same way they understand HTML text. Essentially, they look for indicators – the text around the image or file name and alt tag, to understand what image is the object.
The second step is the file type. It is important to understand what type of file you need for the service. So, for example, you have PNGs, GIFs and JPG files. These are the most typical files that you will find on a website.
JPG files tend to be lighter and also offer the most optimal colors. PNG files, they are more for photography sites. But it takes a lot of time to load and thus affects the speed of the site. Identifying the type of file you need is important in the steps of optimizing the image.
The third step is the size of the image. You want to make sure that the images you upload on your website are uploaded to the size you want to view. Have bigger images than they are intended to be displayed because it is only an unnecessary loading time for the user and may slow down your site.
Thus, the fourth step is image compression. Essentially, this means reducing the image file size while retaining most of the image quality. So, really useful tools to do this are Krav and Photoshop.
Step five creates an XML site image. Essentially, what you want to do is grab all your images, throw them into a site map and add it to Google Search Console. What this will do is make sure that your images are explored by Google plus, indexing them and putting them in the image search.
